A dynamically operating academy was located here. One of the first established in the Middle Ages. Academy was one of the most important cultural centers in Georgia.  Beautiful frescos and manuscripts dated from XII to XVII century were saved in the monastery.

Then we will drive to the monastery complex of  Motsameta. Its foundation is defined as the 8th / 11th century. It was built in honor of two brothers David and Constantine, who organized a rebellion against the attacking Arabs in Georgia. After the rebellion failed, they were captured. They refused to convert to Islam and were tortured to death. Their bodies were thrown into the river, which turned red from blood. The river was named Tskhaltsitela (red water) after this event. Later, the Orthodox Church declared them saints.

The next destination of our trip will be Prometheus Cave. Here we will see impressive stalactites, stalagmites and fossilized water curtains. As many as 1,060 meters of the cave are open to the public. On site, an English-speaking guide will show you around its fascinating corridors.  Return to Kutaisi around 3pm.
