Gelati Monastery
Frescoes in Gelati
Our first destination will be the unique 12th century Gelati complex. A large dose of history is waiting for us. Gelati complex is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There is a tomb of the famous David IV the Builder, one of the greatest rulers of Georgia and Caucasus, who founded this complex. According to legends, the king himself took part in its construction.
A dynamically operating academy was located here. One of the first established in the Middle Ages. Academy was one of the most important cultural centers in Georgia. Beautiful frescos and manuscripts dated from XII to XVII century were saved in the monastery.
Then we will drive to the monastery complex of Motsameta. Its foundation is defined as the 8th / 11th century. It was built in honor of two brothers David and Constantine, who organized a rebellion against the attacking Arabs in Georgia. After the rebellion failed, they were captured. They refused to convert to Islam and were tortured to death. Their bodies were thrown into the river, which turned red from blood. The river was named Tskhaltsitela (red water) after this event. Later, the Orthodox Church declared them saints.

Bagrati Cathedral
Bagrati Cathedral - the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God. It was built during the reign of King Bagrat III. Hence the name Bagrati. It is a symbol of the unification of Georgia. The cathedral was built on the Ukimerioni hill above the city centre of Kutaisi. Its original walls date back to the 11th century. It is an important religious and historical site. It was blown up by the Turks in the 17th century. Only the walls remained. In 2008, reconstruction of the cathedral began. Today we can admire it in its restored version.
