On the trail to the Shkhara Glacier
Trail to Lake Lebarde
Stage I: Trekking, mountain expedition to Lake Lebarde
This is the most difficult part of the expedition. The trekking will take us 3 days. The trail is demanding and wild. There is a lot of elevation to overcome on the route. We pass through two valleys and passes, dense forests, ferns, alpine type glades, mountain streams. We will spend two nights in tents at an altitude of 2500m. This is an expedition into the wild mountains, there is no range, no civilisation. You will encounter wild chamois, herds of cattle, free-roaming horses. These trails have belonged to our families for generations. We develop them in a low impact spirit, taking care of nature. We don't want crowds here. We want everyone to have the opportunity to experience the wildness of these mountains. We organise tourism in a sustainable way. The trails are not typically marked and require a very good knowledge of the terrain in order to navigate them safely.
During the day, we travel between 10 and 15 km.
We start from an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level and the highest point on the trail is 2,850 metres above sea level.
Stage II of the expedition: Trekking, High Caucasus, Ushguli village, Shkhara glacier and mountain lake at 2900 metres
We will set off for the High Caucasus by off-road vehicles on a scenic 4×4 route through the Zagaro Pass at an altitude of 2,800 metres! We will reach the village of Ushguli. The village is the highest settlement in Europe inhabited all year round. Ushguli is under the protection of UNESCO. The village is situated picturesquely at the foot of the highest mountain in Georgia - Shkhara 5203 m. In Ushguli we will stay in a cosy guesthouse.
A view of Shkhara 5203m - Georgia's highest peak and the trail leading to the glacier.
Namkvami Lake (Romisghele) 2600 m.
From Ushguli we will set off on two scenic trails.
1. trekking up to the Shkhara glacier itself and the 2600m Namkvami mountain lake (Romisghele).
The trail leads from the village through a picturesque valley along the Enguri River flowing out of the Shkhara Glacier. We approach the lake via a steep trail along alpine-type glades. Returning from the lake we turn onto the trail below the very head of the glacier. Then we return to Ushguli along the same trail along the river. We finish our trek with a warm dinner at our guesthouse.
The trail measures approximately 20 km in both directions
Altitude: start from 2200 m - highest point on the trail 2600 m
2. trekking to the mountain lake towards Latpari Pass
We set off on the trail from the oldest part of the village of Ushguli. We walk through clearings, streams until we come to massive stretches of rhododendrons. We pass the summer fortress of Queen Tamar. Views of Shkhara, Ushba peak, Ushguli village open up before us. Further on, the trail passes into alpine glades. We reach a mountain lake, which is at an altitude of 2,800 metres. At the lake we stop for a rest. We then return to Ushguli via the same trail.
The trail measures approximately 15 km in both directions
