Georgia's highest glaciers. On horseback around Ushguli

Together with the Ushguli Horse Trails team, we invite you to an amazing expedition starting from Kutaisi! This is an ideal trip for riders with experience in mountain horseback riding, but who don't happen to have a long holiday! You will settle in Ushguli, the highest settlement in Europe inhabited all year round! The village lies at the foot of the highest mountain in Georgia, Shkhara 5203 m! Ushguli is under the protection of UNESCO, it is a unique place on the map of Georgia! You will travel the fabulous trails of the High Caucasus on horseback!

On the trail of the High Caucasus

You will saddle up our brave Swanet horses, which are a mix of Caucasian breeds. You will be impressed by their fitness and how they tackle the trails of the High Caucasus! You will meet the Ushguli team and local horse guides Mose, Gela, Nuro. In Ushguli we will stay overlooking the Shkhare in the guesthouse of our friends, the Ratiani family.

We will reach Ushguli by a scenic route through the 2800m Zagaro Pass! Our routes were inspired by stills from the film "Dede". The film was shot in Ushguli and the actors in it are the villagers (except for one character). Among them you will recognise our horse guides. A screening of the film in a medieval stone tower is a must for our programme!

Expedition programme

Day 1 - Arrival in Georgia
This is the day for the group to assemble. Each participant arriving on this day is collected from the airport and taken directly to the hotel in Kutaisi. It is best to plan a flight to Kutaisi, from where our expedition departs. In case of flights to Tbilisi, we will help with the transfer to Kutaisi. Once all participants have arrived at the guesthouse Hostel Kutaisi by Kote, a welcome and inclusive dinner awaits us. You will enjoy delicious Georgian cuisine and natural wine!

Day 2 - High Caucasus, Ushguli. Shkhara 5203 m
At around 8.00am, we will have breakfast and pack into the cars to transfer to Ushguli. Along the way we will stop at scenic viewpoints. After about 4-5 hours of driving, we will arrive in Ushguli, where we will stay in rooms in a family guesthouse. Ushguli is a remarkable place: it is one of the highest inhabited villages in Europe, even in very harsh and severe winters. There will be a moment to rest after the tour. Around 2 pm, saddled horses and guides from our Ushguli Horse Trails team will be waiting. You will meet our local guides: Mose, Gela and Nuro, as well as our brave Svaneti horses, which are a mix of local Caucasian breeds. We will set off along a mountain trail through a picturesque valley towards the glacier of Mount Shchara, Georgia's highest peak at 5203m. The exact route for the day will depend on the passability of the trail. If the trail is in good condition on horseback we will get as far as Lake Namkvami (Romisghele) at 2500 metres. There, overlooking the glacier, we will stop for a rest. In the second version, the horse will take you to the end of the wide trail, and the last bit to the glacier face will have to be done on foot: those wishing to do so can go on a short trek that takes about 1.5 - 2 hours. Others can sit down in a small, intimate bar run by locals. After the afternoons, we will return to our horses and ride along the Enguri River, whose source is in the glacier. There will be no shortage of good places to gallop along the way. In the afternoon we will return to Ushguli, from the side of the 11th century Lamaria monastery. Maneuvering between stone towers and local houses, we will arrive at our base camp. We will then sit down to dinner at the guesthouse, during which we will taste the characteristic dishes of Svaneti cuisine. We will spend about 2 to 3 hours in the saddle that day

Day 3 - Mountain Lake - the roof of Georgia
We will have breakfast in the morning. In the cars we will drive up to the house of the horse guide Mose, where the saddled horses will already be waiting for us and we will set off! We have about 4 hours ahead of us on the trail. From Ushguli we will set off towards Latpari Pass to the mountain lake and the place called the roof of Georgia! First we will pass through the oldest part of the village of Ushguli. There is an elevation gain of 900 metres ahead of us, and we will take the trail at a walker's pace. The beginning of the route is a steep climb through clearings, streams and unusual stretches of mountain rhododendrons. At times you will have to jump off your horses and walk the more difficult sections. As we climb towards the pass, we will be able to enjoy views of Queen Tamar's summer residence, Ushba Peak, Tetnuldi and Shchara! Swanec horses will show more than once along the way how to conquer such approaches! When we leave for the subalpine meadows, everyone unanimously sighs with delight - the view there is magnificent! And once we see the other side of the mountains in the Lower Svaneti and Megrelia regions, it will mean that we are on the roof of Georgia, at an altitude of almost 3000 metres! We will be surrounded by a beautiful panorama of the Caucasus Mountains, along with Georgia's highest peaks! We'll ride on through vast glades, where we'll sometimes go up at a trot and at a leisurely gallop. At a mountain lake we will stop for a rest and enjoy the views. On the way back, part of the route is covered on foot. We will return to the guest house in Ushguli in the late afternoon and sit down to dinner to continue tasting the delicacies of Svaneti. In the evening, we will take everyone who is interested to the local cinema, which is located in a 1000-year-old stone tower. We will see the film 'Dede' about the lives of the locals, their customs and - of course - a tragic love story! The film was shot in Ushguli and the actors (except for one character) were the villagers, including our horse guides! Our horse trails are inspired by frames from this very film!

Day 4 - Latpari Pass
We will have breakfast in the morning and set off on our next adventure. By cars we will drive about 20 minutes to the starting point in Kala village. There, saddled horses and our guides will already be waiting for us. We will start the horseback crossing on a wide trail leading uphill with numerous twists and turns. With every metre up, we will be presented with amazing views of the accompanying peaks of the High Caucasus. We tackle the trail at a steady pace. Eventually, we will reach the Latpari Pass itself at 2,834 m! There we find a chapel and a picturesque mountain lake. We will prepare a picnic and there will be time for the horses to graze and rest. We will then set off through alpine glades towards Ushguli. At times we will have narrow, rocky sections to overcome on the trail. Wa fabulous views of the peaks of Ushba, Tetnuldi, Shkhara await! We will walk the last section of the trail to Ushguli on foot with horses in tow. This is the same section by which we will descend the day before. This is how we will close our loop. The expedition will take about 5-6 hours.

We say goodbye to our horses and guides and return to our guesthouse for rest and dinner.

Day 5 - Return to Kutaisi
We will have breakfast a little later, around 9 a.m. We will have some time to walk around Ushguli. We will say goodbye to our hosts and then set off by car on our way back to Kutaisi. In the afternoon we will check in at our legendary Kutaisi Hostel, where we will sit down together for a lavish Georgian supra.

Day 6 - Return to Poland
Breakfast awaits us in the morning. All riders will be driven to Kutaisi airport. In case of later departures, it is worth taking a walk around the city, we will advise you what interesting things to see and... eat 🙂 Sooner or later, however, everyone will set off on the way back home.
