Day 3 - On horseback to Natlismtsemeli, the ancient cave complex of the Monastery of St. John the Baptist

On this day we will set off on horseback to Georgian Jordan! To the mystical monastery in the rock of St John the Baptist, which is a fascinating story of Georgia's deep Christian heritage. Its origins date back to the 6th century. Over time, its walls have witnessed countless invasions. From the Turks, to the Persians, to the Mongols. To this day, monks still live in these harsh conditions. On horseback, we travel about 35 km in both directions. The trail leads through vast clearings, steppes and dirt roads. We have good galloping sections along the route. On horseback we arrive at the monastery itself galloping through the canyons and mountains of the desert. As if in the frame of a western movie, we will leave our horses in front of the main gate of the complex to rest. And we will explore on foot the interior of the rock-cut church, the ancient grottoes, the monks' rooms and the tower. There will be a break near the monastery for the horses to rest and a picnic with regional Georgian delicacies. After a rest, we will set off on our return journey. Day 4 - North

After a hearty breakfast, we set off north this time. Ahead of us is the legendary Georgian War Road - already mentioned by ancient geographers in the first century AD. It's not just a road, it's a living history carved into the rocks, winding through mountain passes where every turn reveals incredible views.

After about 3 hours of driving we will arrive in Stepancminda (formerly Kazbegi), a town located at the foot of the mythical 5055m Kazbek Glacier. We will accommodate in our hotel and go to meet our horses!

We will assign you mounts and set off on horseback deep into the High Caucasus to discover places where time has stood still. Our route takes us through villages with unique character. We will pass through the village of Toti, Gaiboteni, a high mountain settlement (about 1,827 metres above sea level) that looks as if it is suspended between heaven and earth. It is from here that one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Terek river valley can be enjoyed. The village of Fansheti, one of the oldest settlements in the region, and the village of Arsha and its picturesque waterfalls! It is here that you will feel the authentic atmosphere of ancient Georgia as you pass the stone houses and defensive towers that once guarded the safety of the valley. Riding on horseback surrounded by the rugged white peaks of the Caucasus Mountains! The region we are travelling through is the historic land of Chevi. The local mountaineers were renowned for their extraordinary bravery and independence, and their horses are still considered the most resistant to the harsh, high mountain conditions.

We will end the day with a traditional Georgian dinner full of local delicacies and a well-earned rest at the hotel, overlooking the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains.

  • Number of hours in the saddle: approx. 4 hours
  • Exceedances: The route varies from flat sections in the valleys to steep climbs of nearly 1,900m.Day 5

Day 5 - Turso Valley

After breakfast we set off on our next adventure! We pack into off-road vehicles that will take us to the gateway of one of the most spectacular valleys in the world. Today our destination is the Truso Valley - a place that can intimidate even the most experienced travellers with its power and majesty. The Truso Valley is a land of extinct volcanoes, hot mineral springs and abandoned stone villages. The trail runs along the Terek River, which originates in these high mountainous regions. Traversing the valley in the saddle, you will see amazing limestone dripstone (travertine). Thanks to the high mineral content of the groundwater, the rocks and earth here shimmer in shades of intense orange, yellow and white. We will pass a picturesque lake that „bubbles” because of the carbon dioxide escaping from the bottom. Our goal is to reach the ruins of the mighty Zakagori fortress (14th century), which proudly rises on a hill just over the border. The view from here over the entire valley is absolutely priceless. We will drive past the stone towers and houses in the villages of Ketrisi and Abano. These are silent witnesses to history, where today time seems to stand still.

After returning from this horseback odyssey, we will head to a well-earned traditional dinner to share our impressions of this magical day over a glass of Georgian wine. We will then return to the hotel for a regeneration

Number of hours in the saddle: approx. 6 hours
Overhills: The route in the valley itself is relatively flat and wide, which is conducive to long gallops or trotting surrounded by giant peaks. We start from an altitude of around 2,000 metres above sea level.

Day 6 - Cminda Sameba Monastery and Kazbek

After breakfast, it's time for an off-road vehicle expedition to the pearl of Georgia, Cminda Sameba Monastery at an altitude of 2170 m! In the background we will be accompanied by the 5055 m Kazbek Glacier!
